Strangers in Town [Sessions 1-3 (6/7/21-15/7/21)]
VESLAN - The "recently discovered" continent to the West of the established Old Country
Delta City (de facto capital of Veslan) - A venetian style city of canals, bridges and barges.
This is the port of arrival for most new-comers to Veslan.
The city is separated into multiple districts, or sectors. These "Quarters" are an uneven, constantly expanding, series of concentric ring-like districts.
- Old Quarter - Oldest part of town, larger buildings, small but well built and established manses and castles are a feature of this area. Many of the elite of Delta city reside in this district, including a good portion of the Gnomish population of the city.
- Business District - ring of middle class around the core of the city, smaller buildings than the Old Quarter.
- Outer Ring , "thirds"(?) - Wooden buildings, unpaved streets, less established, but the buildings are still reasonably large and well constructed, as the jungles/forests surrounding the city make building materials cheap.
- Tent Quarter - Outskirts, most buildings, stores, and other abodes start out as tents that eventually get built up. Lower class inhabitants, many more new arrivals end up in this area before either establishing themselves or, quite often, setting off to find their fortunes in the wilds of Veslan.
Upper Docks - air ships, higher cost fast travel, nobles, merchants etc
Lower Docks - Water travel, Lower class, slower travel
Passengers - 2 teenage-equivalent elves
- human woman (uncertain), alone.
-
Duck and Boar - 3-Storey inn, on the larger side of buildings in the third quarter, with a large yard and stables. The proprietor is red haired beefy looking man named Jorge - (known quietly as Meaty Jorge)
All of the newcomers arrange to rent a room for the night and everyone purchases (or steals) a meal.
Leo and Sage make arrangements to be present at a high stakes card game, to see what opportunity strikes. Black Pete is playing in the game.
The party go to the local market in the wood quarter. On the way, Sage feels Leo out on his willingness to engage in some larceny at the upcoming card game. He implies that he is willing.
Gwyn attempts to buy a ferret but seeing her getting swindled, Sage opens most of the cages in the stall and releases the animals.
The ensuing ruckus clears out a section of the market. Gwyn manages to capture a brown ferret. Sage pockets 10 mice. The party does notice that there are very few guards are present in the market.
The animal seller tasks the group with acquiring new animals for sale. Sends us to her supplier Mrs Pond, an older lady, who is a fixture around town. the party gets to the house and knocks on the door.
Opening the door is Old Mrs Pond, a kindly seeming West Moorlandish widow.
After enquiring about the supply of replacement stock for the storekeeper (Leena), Mrs Pond claims that she doesn't sell animals. Instead, claims Mrs Pond, Leena would arrive with a group of friends and they would descend into the barred-shut
basement under the house, eventually returning, with many caged rodents. Presumably these rodents are descended from the animals that the Late Mr Pond used to breed in the basement.
The party requested permission to decend into the basement to acquire some animals. Mrs Pond agreed, offering a cup of tea, which Taelo accepted, although she did cast detect magic before drinking.
As the other members of the party went to basement they realised that the animals below may be somewhat scarier and more formidable than suspected, as the basement is firmly barred, loud snarls, scratching banging from teh other side of teh basement trapdoor are a common occurence. All the members of the party, including Taelo make their way down into the basement.
Taelo casts a light spell on the dragonborn ranger's quarter-staff, illuminating the basement and revealing a large number of rodents, some seamingly normal, others quite visibly vicious and radiating an aura of disease and corruption to Taelo's arcane senses.
The party engage the larger, meaner rats in combat, mostly firing ranged weapons.
Leo casts a sleep spell on a large number of the rats, putting many of them to sleep. Just as Gwin goes to gather several of the rats into some empty cages found in the chamber, a loud snarl comes out of the darkness behind the party. They spin around in shock to see a giant rat emerging from teh shadows.
